PERSONALITY:

Who knew Death was a flirt?

No, seriously, when Ryoji transferred into the main character’s classroom, no one could predict what kind of person he’d be, especially with the disappearance of Pharos just before his arrival. The truth is that the two are the same person, though it wouldn’t be revealed until much later. Ryoji didn’t seem to have any memory of that, and leapt into high school life straightaway with all the charm and confidence of someone who'd been at it for a while. He became an incorrigible flirt right off the bat and didn’t seem to have any boundaries whatsoever, even acting a bit like a voyeur from time to time. In the short time we’re left with him, we get to see that he’s funny, kind, and genuinely empathetic— up until he has to inform the entire cast he’s going to kill them.

Well, not ‘he’— he’s merely Nyx’s avatar, telling the entire investigation team that there’s nothing more he can do but try to erase their memories before the end of the world comes and destroys everything and everyone, by means of being killed. He’s not at all happy about this, either, switching to a stern tone far different than his usual behavior. Even if he acts a little dense at times from his flirting, he usually bounces back effortlessly and with charisma. That’s what makes the change in his personality so dramatic towards the end of the game, giving the team a weak ‘good luck’ when it comes to defeating him.

Beneath all the fluff and turmoil of his short existence is someone who’s genuinely softhearted, who wants to do right by others and wants to see them live and have happiness. He’s the exact opposite of an ultimate antagonist, in fact, were it not his job as the avatar of death, he wouldn’t even hurt a fly. He craves sincerity and understanding, acting as an outsider to the world, commenting on how tranquil things are around the MC, perhaps because they’re with him. It really does feel like Ryoji marvels at the beauty of the world itself, not just the girls in it.

It just so happens it makes him a bit of a ditz, though. He often idly comments on things he finds out about the world as if he’s a tourist, only to laugh about it a few minutes later. This care free attitude comes with a lack of memory, commenting that he feels like he knows the protagonist from somewhere as well as Aigis, who views him as nothing short of a threat. He feels nostalgic over things like rings, which remind him of the importance of making memories, and while he’s constantly pressed about the idea of memories, he loves hanging out with people and making them.

A lot of this is why he acts with what he perceives as mercy when it comes to the player character and their companions— he wants to see them live out their last days with happiness and unawareness that the end is coming and soon everything will be lost. However, the investigation team wants to fight against him and the oncoming end with everything they have— thus leaving him speechless and unable to do a thing to stop him.

When Ryoji shifts to his serious mode, he becomes quiet and insistent that some things in the world you can’t change, so it’s better to live happily in unawareness. Most of this must come from his overarching story in the plot— Ryoji Mochizuki as a human held no memories of his previous life, but he enjoyed his time in Iwatodai and Kyoto all the same, waxing poetic on and on about memories and how important he felt it was to make them with your friends. When Junpei is shocked by Chidori’s death, he’s not sure how to react, stating that people die and he asks the player character if that was ‘too cold’ of him.

Something in Ryoji marvels at the capabilities of humans, how much they can endure and stand against in the face of death. Even when his voice comes to comfort them towards the end, he’s full of wonder that they could pull it off at all. It’s the curiosity of humans that keeps him coming back to them, and he treats people with that same kind of respect, even if he can be rather hopeless when he's serious.

All in all, he’s an interesting character who goes through the pages of his story with hope, happiness, melancholy and regret for what he has to do. A character tethered to a purpose he had no part in choosing and definitely doesn’t want, opting do to only what he can for the people he cares about.

ABILITIES:
- As the Nyx avatar, Ryoji has the ability to power through all sorts of things, distorting and warping reality intentionally or not, and those are the kinds of powers I don’t really want to bring. He’ll be able to stop machinery that’s coming to hurt him, has a touch of death that can stop rogue creatures if he really has to use it, but otherwise he’s got few powers aside aside from amiable negotiation.
- He can also change form into a lookalike of the persona Thanatos, and thus likely can wield the same powers as well.

INVENTORY: Just his clothes and trademark long yellow scarf!

MEMORY ALTERATION: Ryoji was just kind of living a sub-existence as Nyx’s avatar at the end of the game when Subnautica called to him. Figuring a place with people was better than a place with nothing, he gladly leapt at the chance to join a new world.

SAMPLE:

“I wonder what kind of world this is…”

Ryoji stared outside into the vast blue ocean, one hand resting on the glass as he craned his head to see the fish skimming just below.

Being alive again in some way was a relief as much as it was frightening, because life could be taken away as easily as it was given, only Ryoji wasn’t blessed with the foresight he had before. This time, he didn’t know how much time he’d have, or even expressly why he was given it, just that he had jumped at the chance to… exist and feel again. He would have given anything for it, but now that he had it, he wasn’t sure what to do with it. The ocean was beautiful, true, but…

“Not exactly the sunny ocean paradise I expected. That’s all right.”

He made his way down the hallways, twirling his scarf in one hand and taking in every sight and sound he could. All of them, new experiences to be memorized. In the confines of these dark quarters, some people might lose their minds trying to understand all of it. To him, it was open and vast and comforting, and while he was effectively clueless, he was eager to not be.

Giving a passing smile to a cute girl walking by him, he pushed open the door to the observatory and called out cheerfully to the A.I.

"URSULA," He began, his tone almost singsong. "Could you teach me something new today?"
